IRS E-Mail Tax Scam

Resources

E-mails appearing to be from the Internal Revenue Service are being received by credit union employees and members. The message indicates that the recipient is due a tax refund and should click on a link to “apply for the refund.”

Do not click the link in the e-mail or open the attachment. The IRS does not send out unsolicited e-mails or ask for detailed personal and financial information. Additionally, the IRS never asks people for the PIN numbers, passwords, or similar secret access information for their credit card, bank, or other financial accounts.

The IRS recommends that you forward phishing scams appearing to be sent by the IRS using the procedure outlined on their website.
